5 Tips for Aquascaping a Reef-Safe Tank

A great reef tank starts with great rock. Whether you are starting fresh or rebuilding a tired scape, here are five things that separate a pile of rock from a centerpiece people remember.

1. Build in negative space

The most common mistake is using too much rock. Open space makes a scape look bigger, keeps water moving, and gives your corals room to grow into the gaps. Leave room to breathe.

2. Engineer flow from the start

Design around your powerheads, not against them. Arches and channels let water move through the structure instead of around it, which means fewer dead spots and less detritus settling where you do not want it.

3. Use reef-safe rock, always

Inert, reef-safe rock keeps your water chemistry stable and your livestock safe. Skip anything painted, dyed, or of unknown origin. Your fish and corals will thank you.

4. Give your fish somewhere to hide

Caves, overhangs, and swim-throughs are not just for looks. Shy fish settle in faster and show themselves more often when they know a safe retreat is nearby.

5. Plan around your livestock

An SPS-heavy tank wants open, high-flow ledges. A fish-heavy tank wants caves and structure. Decide who is living in the tank before you decide how to build it.
