What is live rock?
Live rock is reef rock that has already been colonized by living organisms. It has spent time in the ocean or in an established aquarium, so it arrives carrying beneficial bacteria, coralline algae, and small creatures like copepods and worms. You can buy it wild-harvested from the ocean, aquacultured (placed in the sea to mature, then collected), or straight out of a hobbyist's mature system. That living biology is the whole point, and it is what makes the rock "live."
What is dry rock?
Dry rock is reef rock with no living organisms on it. It might be ancient reef rock that formed on land, or previously live rock that has been dried out and cleaned. It carries no bacteria and no hitchhikers when it goes into your tank, so you start with a blank canvas. Cost

Once these establish in a reef, some are genuinely hard to remove. Dry rock carries none of that. You start pest-free and stay in control of what enters your system.
Cycling time
Live rock has a real head start here. Because it already holds beneficial bacteria, it can cycle a new tank faster, sometimes with very little die-off if it is kept wet in transit. Dry rock has no bacteria to begin with, so it takes longer to cycle while those colonies establish. The gap is smaller than it used to be, though: a bottled bacteria starter and an ammonia source will cycle dry rock in a few weeks. It just asks for a little patience up front.
Sustainability
Wild-harvested live rock is taken from natural reefs, and that collection carries an environmental cost that has led to restrictions in many regions. Aquacultured live rock is far kinder, since it is farmed rather than stripped from a reef. Aesthetics and control

A popular approach is to build the whole structure from dry rock, then add one small piece of live rock, a cup of live sand, or a bottled bacteria product to seed it. You get the clean, sculptable, pest-free base of dry rock with a faster biological head start. Inspect or quarantine any live material first, since even a small piece can carry a hitchhiker.
