  • Nano and small tanks. A couple of well-chosen pieces is often plenty. Overload a small tank and the rock swallows the very water volume you were trying to protect.
  • Large tanks. Rock does not scale in a straight line. A big display can run a proportionally lighter, more open scape and look more dramatic for it.
  • What you plan to keep. An SPS-focused tank rewards open flow and plenty of light-facing real estate up high. A tank built around LPS, softies, or a heavier fish load has different priorities. Your livestock plan should shape the rockwork, not the other way around.
  • The look you are after. A minimalist single-island scape and a full reef wall need very different amounts of rock, and both can be done well. Decide on the style before you weigh anything.

Structure Beats Volume

  • Dry-fit your scape outside the tank first, and live with the shape before it ever goes underwater.
  • Leave open sand and clear swim lanes on purpose. Empty space is a design choice, not a gap waiting to be filled.
  • Remember that you can always add. Dropping in another piece later is far easier than tearing down an overbuilt tank.
